Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) examination and test
The Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) Regulations requires employers to prevent / control operator exposure to substances hazardous to health.
As part of the hierarchy of control, the use of engineering controls, local exhaust ventilation systems, to remove hazardous substances is promoted.
CoSHH Regulation 9 invokes a statutory requirement for all LEV systems to be routinely examined at least every 14 months.
The statutory LEV examination includes:
- Initial assessments as required by CoSHH
- 6 monthly or 14 monthly routine assessments
- Schematic of system
- Completion of visual inspection of system including fan and filter (where appropriate)
- Determination of static pressures and velocities in duct work
- Determination of face velocities at all hoods
- Indication of whether the system meets the appropriate recommended standard
- Recommendations with regards to improvements to ensure satisfactory performance
All statutory LEV examination and tests are undertaken to meet the current HSE document, Controlling airborne contaminants at work, A guide to local exhaust ventilation (LEV) (HSG258)
Competency training (P601 Commissioning and and Thorough Examination & Testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems) has been completed by all consultants.
Go to the HSE website for more information about LEV.
